I teach because rigorous methods are how social justice claims become social justice evidence. My job in the classroom is to make dense, difficult material feel learnable — and to make every student certain they belong in the room.

Human Behavior in the Social Environment (SWFN 5002)
The foundational tour of how people develop inside families, institutions, and systems — taught with live data, current events, and theory students can actually use in practice. Qualitative feedback consistently highlights one thing: complex material made manageable.

A Sociopolitical Study of LGBTQ+ Experiences in the US & Brazil
An immersive comparative course on queer life, policy, and community organizing across two countries — equal parts seminar, field study, and passport stamps. Students do transnational analysis of marginalized communities, in person.

Science of Social Work (4 sections), plus lab instruction for Introductory Social Work Statistics and Multiple Regression across six semesters. Translation: I genuinely enjoy teaching regression to people who swore they hated math.
Classroom + research pipeline
AI in social work, taught responsibly
I train students to critically evaluate and apply digital tools — including generative AI — inside ethical, evidence-based frameworks. I also lead SWAG (Social Work Aligned GenAI), the Brown School faculty group on AI in education, research, practice, and policy.

Mentorship
Mentorship is the part of this job with the longest half-life. I advise PhD students across both the Social Work and Public Health Sciences programs, and I run mentorship the way I run studies: clear aims, honest feedback, real authorship. Students on my team don't fetch coffee — they lead papers.
- 7 student-led publications among my peer-reviewed articles, with four more student-first manuscripts currently under review.
- Mentees present at SSWR, APHA, and SSSS — first-author posters and papers on state policy climates, LGBTQ+ help-seeking, relationship role models, and IPV.
- Research topics my students currently own: identity disclosure to family, rural resource access, non-monogamous relationship structures, and influencer-based recruitment methods.
